Great Decisions 3

Turkey’s challenges

By Lenore Martin

Turkey: a nation at a crossroads, a bridge over an ever-growing chasm between the East and West. Turkey’s first Prime Minister Kemal Ataturk envisioned a modern, democratic nation-state built on the ashes of the Ottoman Empire with strong ties to Europe, not the Middle East. But as the clashes between secular and religious groups and the recent protests in Taksim Square show, the soul of Turkey is still very much up for grabs.

Great Decisions is America’s largest discussion program on world affairs. The program model involves reading the Great Decisions Briefing Book (not required) and meeting in a Discussion Group to discuss the most critical global issues facing America today. The program provides background information and policy options for eight critical issues facing America and serves as the focal text for discussion groups across the country.
