A Letter from our President, Christine Sheckler

Dear San Diego World Affairs Council Members,

This past year SDWAC has worked to expand our reach and effectiveness (i.e., providing more valuable international affairs information to more World Affairs Council members). This Richard Haas event is the result of an idea I had two years ago, to build a partnership with all the California World Affairs Councils with a goal to share best practices, cost-share for in-person speakers, and build larger participant numbers to attract more high-profile speakers.

This Richard Haas event is the culmination of our first multi-California World Affairs Councils collaboration. All California World Affairs Councils, except San Francisco, have generously participated in the planning, organizing, and implementation of this event. There are many benefits to multi-World Affairs Councils collaborations, so to incentivize further collaborations it will be important that SDWAC "shows up" to this first one! I ask you to please Register for the Richard Haas event and join your fellow California WACs family. I look forward to seeing you all online for the Richard Haas Zoom event, on TUESDAY, 29 MARCH 2022 @ 11:00 A.M. (please note this is a MORNING event).

As always, thank you for your continued interest in world affairs!

Stay safe and well.
My very bests to you,
Christine

A Forum on the United States’ Role as an International Actor in 2022, hosted by the Coalition of California World Affairs Councils

Our current moment is defined by overlapping international crises. We are in year three of a global pandemic that has decimated communities across the world. There is an alarming trend of growing humanitarian emergencies: food shortages, refugee displacement, and political instability. Tensions have been rising between global superpowers and longstanding alliances are being reshaped in real-time. This February, Russia invaded the sovereign nation of Ukraine bringing war back to Europe for the first time since World War Two.

The world is changing fast. As these global conflicts shift and overlap, the United States’ response is complicated and fraught with challenges. But the stakes are higher than ever.

How should the U.S. forge ahead in the wake of global crises? What international role should the U.S. play, and what tactics should be employed to protect national security and fight international instability?

To address these challenging questions about the future of the United States’ role in the world, the Coalition of California’s World Affairs Councils presents our forum assessing U.S. Foreign Policy Amid Global Crisis, featuring keynote speaker Dr. Richard Haass, President of the Council on Foreign Relations and moderated by Colonel Richard Downie.

The Coalition of California’s World Affairs Councils consists of the Los Angeles World Affairs Council & Town Hall, San Diego World Affairs Council, World Affairs Council of the Desert, World Affairs Council of Orange County, World Affairs Council of Sonoma County, and World Affairs Council of Monterey Bay. United in our shared mission to foster ongoing public education and discourse on the role of the United States in global affairs, we formed this coalition to present special programs to our audiences across California and the United States.
